How to replace the drive chain?

The efficient operation of each system results from the appropriate selection of its components. However, it should be remembered that with use all the components wear out, and after some time it becomes necessary to replace them. It is no different in the case of drive chains, as well as the accompanying elements that make up the so-called drive set. What is worth knowing about these solutions? And how to replace them? We answer these and other questions in our article.

What should I know about drive chains?

Drive chains is a widely used power transmission. These elements are universal, excellent in terms of quality and created taking into account the latest knowledge. The three main types of chains are ring (link) chains, ladder (Gall) chains, and plate chains. Their basic advantages include the lack of slip, which translates into constant application and high efficiency (compared to belt transmissions), as well as no need to use a strong preload.

However, it should be remembered that despite its advantages, drive chains deteriorate over time. In the event of noticing unfavorable changes, such as damage and reduced sharpness, it becomes necessary to replace them. It is noteworthy that the drive chain wears faster in rough terrain and also when proper maintenance has not been applied. Importantly, in most cases it is necessary to replace the entire set, i.e. both the sprockets and the chain. Only thanks to such a comprehensive operation can the entire system maintain its efficiency for a long time.

How to replace the drive chain?

The process of replacing the drive chain differs depending on the machine in which it is used. We outline the steps to take below.

The first task is to unscrew the rack by loosening the mounting bolt. Then, using a flat screwdriver, remove the clip that connects the chain links, and also remove the chain from the sprockets and remove the wheel. The next step is to unscrew the second rack. At this stage, it is also worth checking the condition of the bearings (if any).

Once the old drive kit has been removed, you can proceed to the next steps. The assembly of new elements is similar to their disassembly. However, a common problem that we can encounter is the use of a too long, mismatched chain. To keep the whole layout correct. After that, it is necessary to screw the front sprocket and install the chain with a clip on the sprocket and a flat screwdriver.
