What is the difference between type A and type B roller chain?

When choosing a roller chain, you need to check the standard according to which it was made. This allows you to select a chain that matches the rest of the component. are available roller chains manufactured in European (otherwise British) and American standards:

  • European standard roller chains – type B, standards: BS228, DIN 8187, PN77/M-84168, ISO 606,
  • American standard roller chains – type A, standards: ANSI B29.1, PN77/M-84168, DIN 8188, ISO R 606A.

How to read the dimensions of roller chains?

One of the most important markings of the roller chain is expressed in inches pitch - that is, the distance from the center of the pin to the rollers located next to each other. The pitch in the European standard is a multiple of 1/16 inch, in the American standard - 1/8 inch. Roller chains are also available in versions e.g. one-, two- or three-row. This information is expressed by a number after specifying the string type. For example:

  • chain 12B-1 – type B single-row chain, pitch: 19,05 mm.
  • chain 16A-2 - type A chain, double row, pitch: 25,4 mm.
