What are gears used for?

Gears are the most important elements in any gear transmission. As the name suggests, the characteristic feature of gears is protruding teeth, i.e. regular cuts that run around the entire circumference of a circular disk. The gear wheel is designed to transfer the movement to other wheels or the rack – depending on the type of gearbox.

The gear train consists of at least two gears which may be of the same or different diameter. Two identical wheels produce the same torque and spin at the same speed in different directions, and two wheels with different diameters achieve different speeds and torques. Thanks to this gear wheels can make better use of driving forces and rotational speeds. Gears can have straight, helical, roof and arc-shaped teeth.

The use of gears

Gears work in various types of mechanisms and are often used in suspended transport systems. Gears are used by manufacturers of cars, agricultural machinery, drive systems and turbines. The wheels work in the equipment that we use every day at home.

Properly selected gears will work quietly and reliably, evenly and constantly. The wheels are easy to use and do not cause problems during operation. Long-term quiet operation is guaranteed by regular maintenance. Lubrication reduces the friction forces and therefore also affects the service life of the transmission components. Gears are used in various mechanisms in the aerospace, automotive and shipbuilding industries, therefore the properties of steel, which should be characterized by high ductility and resistance to crushing, are very important. Therefore, carbon steel, alloy steel and black cast iron are most often used for the production of gears.
