Chain conveyors, conveyors that transport large and unusual components, should be regularly maintained. This is a series of activities performed at different intervals to ensure optimal performance and pace of work and safety of the production facility. These include checking the chain voltage, determining its wear, securing it with grease and monitoring engine noise levels. In our entry we present tips for optimal maintenance of chain conveyors. We invite you to read.
What is the maintenance of the chain convoy components?
One of the steps in cable maintenance is weekly voltage monitoring to easily notice subtle changes. It is also important to carry out an assessment for signs of rusting, stretching, hooking or falling off the chain from the track. Remove accumulated dirt every day and check the drive train tensioners and lubricate the drive wheels if necessary.
Lubricate the drive chain to increase conveyor efficiency and eliminate excessive friction. In order to avoid rusting, it is worth using suitable lubricants, recommended by the manufacturer. It is worth being aware that it is not enough to simply apply grease to the discs of the chain, but also between the inner and outer plate, above the split point. For chain systems equipped with rollers, it should also be applied between the inner plates and rollers. The grease will then reach the bearing surface and protect it from friction and wear.
If the grease is applied manually with an oiler, can or brush, lubrication should be carried out at least every 8 hours. In the case of drip lubrication, the oil is dosed by the lubricator in the amount of 5 to 20 drops per minute, depending on the current chain travel speed.
Another way of applying grease is the bathing method, which involves immersing part of the gear together with the chain in the oil tank. This immersion shall not exceed 0,6 to 1,3 cm so that no heat is separated which may change the properties of the lubricant.
Monitoring of engine noise levels should be carried out regularly. In addition, check and record its temperature, and then evaluate it on a monthly basis. Engine fixing bolts are also evaluated. When loosening is found, tighten the screws immediately. This will ensure the safety of the conveyor.
It is extremely important to evaluate the condition of gears for wear, routinely 4 times a year. It is worth bearing in mind that any warped gears can cause the chain to lengthen, leading to the failure of the entire conveyor. The noise level of the bearings and reducer and the measurement of its temperature and oil level should also be checked. In this way, any defects can be detected on an ongoing basis and immediately removed.
